What to Expect on AC Installation Day: A Step-by-Step Guide for Homeowners

May 26, 2026 | Blog

Replacing your air conditioner is one of the bigger home investments you’ll make, and for most homeowners, it’s something that happens once every 10 to 15 years. That gap between installations means most people have no idea what AC installation day actually looks like. What time do the technicians show up? How long will the house be without air? What should you do to prepare?

This guide walks you through the entire process, from the days leading up to installation through the final system test, so there are no surprises when the Air Tech of Humble crew pulls into your driveway.

Before Installation Day: What Happens in Advance

The work that sets up a smooth installation happens well before any equipment arrives at your door.

The In-Home Assessment

A reputable HVAC company won’t quote a replacement system over the phone. Before scheduling your AC installation, a technician will visit your home to assess your current setup. They’ll evaluate your existing ductwork, measure your home’s square footage and layout, check insulation levels, and identify any code-compliance issues with the current installation.

This assessment is also when your technician determines what size AC unit your home needs. Bigger is not better with air conditioning. An oversized unit will short-cycle, driving up humidity and energy costs. An undersized unit will run constantly and still struggle on the hottest Houston days. Proper load calculation is what separates a professional installation from a parts-swap.

Equipment Selection and Scheduling

Once your technician has the assessment data, they’ll recommend one or more system options based on your home’s needs, your budget, and efficiency targets. This is a good moment to ask about SEER ratings, the efficiency rating that directly affects your monthly energy bill, and available financing options if you’re managing a larger upgrade.

Air Tech carries equipment from Trane, Carrier, Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, and American Standard, so you’ll have real options rather than a single take-it-or-leave-it recommendation. Once you’ve selected a system and confirmed the installation date, the office will order your equipment and confirm arrival windows with you.

How to Prepare Your Home the Night Before

A little prep the evening before installation makes the day run faster and protects your home.

  • Clear the work areas. The technicians will need unobstructed access to your indoor air handler (typically in a closet, attic, or utility room) and your outdoor condenser pad. Move storage boxes, furniture, or anything else blocking those paths.
  • Secure your pets. The crew will be moving in and out of the house repeatedly, and exterior doors will be propped open for extended periods. Put dogs and cats in a room that’s out of the work zone for the day.
  • Plan for the heat. Your home will be without air conditioning for the bulk of the installation, typically a full workday. In Humble’s summer heat, that’s significant. If you have family members who are elderly, very young, or heat-sensitive, consider arranging for them to spend the day elsewhere. Have cold water on hand for the crew, too.
  • Note the thermostat setting. The technicians will need to access your thermostat. If it’s a smart or programmable model, knowing your preferences makes the final setup faster.

What Happens When the Technicians Arrive

Here is what a professional AC installation looks like, step by step.

Step 1: Reviewing the Plan with You

Before any tools come out, a lead technician should walk you through the day’s work, covering what’s being removed, what’s going in, and any changes being made to the existing setup (new disconnect box, updated refrigerant lines, ductwork modifications, etc.). This is your chance to ask questions and confirm everything matches what was quoted.

Step 2: Removing the Old System

The crew will recover any remaining refrigerant from the old system. Federal EPA regulations require this, and any reputable contractor handles it as a matter of course. Then they’ll disconnect the electrical, remove the indoor air handler or evaporator coil, and pull the outdoor condenser unit. For most residential systems, equipment removal takes one to two hours.

Step 3: Installing the New Equipment

With the old system out, installation of the new equipment begins. The outdoor condenser is set on the existing pad (or a new one if the old pad is cracked or improperly sized). The indoor unit is put in place and connected to the existing ductwork. If your assessment identified ductwork issues, this is when repairs or modifications happen, including sealing leaks, replacing damaged flex duct runs, or resizing supply and return openings.

Step 4: Electrical and Refrigerant Connections

New systems require dedicated electrical connections that meet current code requirements. Your technician will verify the disconnect box, breaker size, and wiring meet those standards, and replace anything that doesn’t. Once electrical is confirmed, the refrigerant lines are connected and the system is pressurized and leak-tested before any refrigerant is charged.

This step takes time and shouldn’t be rushed. A proper refrigerant charge is critical to system efficiency and compressor longevity. If a technician is moving through this step in under 30 minutes, that’s worth asking about.

Step 5: Testing and Commissioning

With all connections made, the system is powered on and tested. The technician will check:

  • Supply and return air temperatures (verifying the system is achieving proper delta-T)
  • Refrigerant pressures and superheat/subcooling readings
  • Airflow at every register
  • Thermostat communication and programming
  • Condensate drain function and safety shutoff

This is also when your technician verifies the system is operating within the manufacturer’s performance specs, which matters for warranty registration.

Step 6: The Final Walkthrough

Before the crew packs up, your lead technician should walk you through the completed installation. They’ll show you the new equipment, explain the maintenance schedule (primarily filter changes and annual tune-ups), confirm warranty registration details, and answer any questions. Ask for documentation of the installation, including model numbers, serial numbers, and the warranty paperwork, before they leave.

How Long Does AC Installation Take?

For a standard single-system residential installation with no major ductwork modifications, plan for four to eight hours. Two-story homes, attic installations, or systems that require ductwork work can run longer. Multi-system homes or full duct replacements are typically scheduled over two days.

The Air Tech team will give you a time estimate before your installation date. If the job ends up requiring additional work uncovered once the old system came out, such as a corroded drain pan or deteriorated ductwork connections, a good technician will stop, show you what they found, and get your approval before proceeding. No surprises on the invoice.

What to Ask Before the Crew Leaves

Don’t let the technicians pack up until you have answers to these:

  • Is the system registered with the manufacturer? Warranty registration is often time-sensitive. Confirm this was handled or get instructions to do it yourself.
  • What are the filter specs and how often should I change them? Filter type and change frequency depend on your specific air handler and indoor air quality needs.
  • Where is the condensate drain, and how do I check it? A clogged drain is one of the most common service calls after a new installation.
  • What’s covered under the labor warranty, and for how long? Manufacturer equipment warranties and contractor labor warranties are separate. Know both.
  • What does the first tune-up look like, and when should I schedule it?

Your First Season with the New System

Once the installation is complete, give the system a few days to stabilize before making major thermostat adjustments. New systems sometimes need a brief break-in period, and refrigerant pressures can settle slightly as the system reaches equilibrium.

Schedule your first AC tune-up within the first year, both to keep the manufacturer warranty intact and to catch any minor adjustments before they become problems. Air Tech’s Shield Membership program covers annual maintenance visits and includes priority scheduling, which matters during the peak summer season when wait times grow.

If anything seems off in the first few weeks, such as unusual noises, uneven cooling, short cycling, or the system running longer than expected, call sooner rather than later. New installations occasionally have minor commissioning issues that are quick fixes when caught early.
